TUESDAY TIPS — Wire Gesture

Here’s another way to approach Gesture Drawing. In order to shut up the part of my brain that tries to analyze and do things step by step. Overthinking often leads to stiff posing. So I sometimes draw with an almost continuous line. This way, I get across an idea or feeling very fast without thinking it through to much. this way, I get an organic feeling to the drawing without trying too hard. I can then go back and fix things or bring more clarity by drawing over it. But, I try to draw the figure in a three-dimensional space. So, as best as I can describe it, I use the line like a wire in space. This way, I get a fluid movement through the body that pushes through to the feet, and all the way to the fingers. For me, it’s the best way to not get caught up in the details. There’s always room to go back and fix things. That’s the one area where digital comes very handy. Just create a new layer on top and use the loose wire drawing as the gesture to draw on top of. Tell me if that helps you see Gesture in a different way. This is a personal approach but I’m to hear if anyone else’s brain works that way too. - Norm @grizandnorm #100TuesdayTipsBook #100TuesdayTips #TuesdayTips #grizandnorm #GestureDrawing #drawingtutorials #drawingtips

Hello Tuesday.

Thank you for support in Tuesday Tips, we are reprinting them for CTN and we are planning to do a second volume too. We are thinking of Kickstarter, we will talk about it more in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Back to the tips, for me turnaround is really exciting. It is really fun to see your character from different side. This is a very handy guide when you are working in animation, 2D and CG; making a comic book or illustrating a picture book.
I like to do FRONT, ¾ FRONT, SIDE, ¾ BACK, and BACK.
I use two color for the guide lines. The first one is for big landmark; such as top of the head, ear, chin, arms, legs. In my example, you can see my underdrawing that I will later on turn off. On the second row, I use another color for more detail; such as eyes, eyebrow, mouth, … Swipe right to see more details of the drawings.
Happy drawing!

Tuesday Tips - Visual Anchors
I call “Visual Anchors” elements that I can rely on to express volume, direction or perspective without truly “seeing” the full thing. I “know” that a belt goes all around the waist and will express volume while hiding construction lines. Overall, they are knowledge more than information. They help solidify something you’re drawing from life. Hope this helps.

Tuesday Tips – Character Design exercise.

This is a very fun and basic character design exercise. Use basic shape and make a character out of them. I choose to do a super stylized cat, cause cat rules!!!! Also, they’re fun to caricature.

Here’s the step:
1. Draw a bunch of square, triangle, and circles. They don’t have to be a perfect shape.
2. Put eyes, ears, whiskers, tails, legs.
3. Add patterns on the body.
Remember, it’s all in the attitude.

Have fun!

XO,
Griz

Tuesday Tips - Pelvis Tilt
Whenever I approach a standing pose (drawing from life or from imagination), I’m always on the lookout for weight distribution. It may be very hard to notice, but most standing poses apply most of the body weight on one leg, and using the other one mostly for balance. It creates a slight “pelvis tilt” that informs the rest of the posing. It usually means that the shoulders are tilted as well in the opposite way. Same with the eye line. It forms a rhythm of angles that brings appeal and movement to the pose. On top of it, it showcases the iliac crest ( part of the pelvis sticking out close to the skin). Use this to bring structure and appeal to the simplest standing pose.
