Hello Tuesday! Today’s tip is on composing an expression page. There are many ways to do this; I tend to put my main one in the middle, then I put other expression surrounding it. It’s good to make them relate to one another and tell a story. I think of Norman Rockwell’s Gossip whenever I make an expression page. This is of course a super simplified version compare to his. Happy drawing!

Hi! Happy Tuesday! Today’s tip is on one of my favorite subject, color theory; specifically on chromatic fringe.
It is the red fringe or hot saturated color you see at the edge of cast shadow and where it meets the light area. The rougher the object edge casting the shadow or the further away the object is, the more red fringe you’ll see. This is different than chromatic abberation, which is color fringing caused by lens failure. You can see chromatic fringe with your eyes. The more you paint from life and make observation, the easier it is to see. It’s one of those things that once you see it, you cannot unsee. :) XO,
Griz

ps. On stylized painting, where you want to have a hard edge on a shadow, you don’t always have to put it. Like everything in art, you can choose to put something in or not. But it’s always good to know your basic and know the rules before breaking it. Happy painting!

Hello Tuesday.

Thank you for support in Tuesday Tips, we are reprinting them for CTN and we are planning to do a second volume too. We are thinking of Kickstarter, we will talk about it more in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Back to the tips, for me turnaround is really exciting. It is really fun to see your character from different side. This is a very handy guide when you are working in animation, 2D and CG; making a comic book or illustrating a picture book.
I like to do FRONT, ¾ FRONT, SIDE, ¾ BACK, and BACK.
I use two color for the guide lines. The first one is for big landmark; such as top of the head, ear, chin, arms, legs. In my example, you can see my underdrawing that I will later on turn off. On the second row, I use another color for more detail; such as eyes, eyebrow, mouth, … Swipe right to see more details of the drawings.
Happy drawing!
